Which is the best DAW software for you? Ableton or FL Studio? Let's dive in and find out.Ībleton Live offers producers a unique approach to music creation, providing software that shines in the studio, as well as in live performance settings, hence the name. The latest versions of these programs add impressive new features to keep the long-term fans happy, as well as reel in new ones. Used by professionals globally, these DAWs have been around for about 20+ years, each gathering new diehard fans in the process, and with good reason. Today, we'll be engaging in a head-to-head comparison between these pieces of music software, taking a closer look at their unique features and functionality.įL Studio 7 was my very first DAW, and I've grown to use Ableton Live regularly over the past few years, so I'll try to keep an unbiased opinion when making comparisons. These are two electronic music production giants as far as DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) are concerned, each containing powerful elements respectively. I enjoy using both, and can find both quite inspiring or uninspiring at different times.Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, chances are you've probably heard of Ableton Live and FL Studio. I'd say overall they are very comparable, just quite different styles. Sampling is pretty much the same in both, except for time-stretching which is far far far better in Abletonĭrum programming slightly nicer in FL due to the step sequencer, but then much more annoying to layer drums. One big issue with Ableton is I can fit way less arrangement view tracks on my screen without having to collapse them all However in some ways arrangement is better: can directly record automation onto the timeline without needing to record to a separate "pattern clip" like in FL it's easier to "stay on the grid" while in FL it's very easy to have a slightly too long pattern fuck everything up when duplicating a few bars of clips. However I personally find arrangement very cumbersome and there are some glaring idiosyncrasies (cannot set default grid size for example, "Narrow" is far too narrow, 99% never need more than 16ths), and Ableton don't seem too keen on making any significant changes to the workflow (Racks need a huge update imo). Session mode is really incredible for creative exploration and jamming without feeling stuck in a "loop". Bundled plugins are mostly a bit worse than Ableton (no bitcrusher, Fruity Compressor is awful., Reverb 2 can be hit or miss), but some a bit better (Maximus is great).Ībleton is great and the standard. Recently they added being able to link arrangement tracks to channels to mixer tracks which is really great and a big change. Personally I do like the pattern-based nature of FL Studio, specifically that I can have a bank of pattern clips and if I update one it is updated throughout, plus it's always improving with free lifetime updates.
